Why hire a postpartum doula?
Updated: Apr 6, 2020
Some of us are lucky to have a close knit family who would jump in to help out with whatever situation we find ourselves in, and some of us have a huge group of understanding friends. Others don’t always have that support. When it comes to hiring a postpartum doula, there are benefits no matter how extensive your support system is:
There when you need them. Because you choose the hours you want your doula to work, they can be there for the times of day you find most difficult or stressful, whether that’s breakfast, trying to sort out the mid afternoon dog walk, or the middle of the night feeds. It might not be so easy to persuade a friend to come round at those times!
Up to date, evidence based information. Yes, whilst Aunt Sheila may well have had six children and know all there is about getting them to sleep through the night, her knowledge may be a little out of touch with newer research. Your doula will make it a priority to keep her education up to date, and based on facts, not on “Well it worked for me!”.
Your baby, your body, your choice - no judgement. Your doula will respect your choices, and won’t try to persuade you to do something you’re not comfortable with. In fact, a doula’s job is to provide you with unbiased information so that you can make the best decision for you, your baby and your family.
Links to community resources. Your doula probably has a huuuuge list of useful, reliable resources for your local community, from breastfeeding support groups to sling libraries and so much more.
There for YOU. Your doula isn’t coming round to coo over your baby (though they probably will). They’re not coming to one-up your birth story (they’ll just listen and let you talk - if you want to). They’re coming to help YOU with whatever YOU need. If you want someone to watch your baby while you nap, your doula can do that. If that pile of dishes is stressing you out, your doula will do the washing up. If you have a question about safe sleep that you couldn’t find the right answer to on Google, your doula can answer it or point you in the right direction. Your doula is there for YOU.
There’s a saying that a newborn baby needs 3 adults in their life - their mother, to look after the baby; someone to look after the mother; and someone to look after everything else. Whether your doula is one of these three, or is the fourth, they will gently support your transition into parenthood and enable you to have a more positive postpartum period.
